Inspired by the Russian fairy tale of Vasilisa and Baba Yaga, this is the story of a 'Cinderella' that has no need of a Fairy Godmother or a glass slipper to help her become a Queen… But at what cost? It’s a fable that can be interpreted in many different ways: is it about the power of women? The price of fame? The loss of innocence? Fate and free will? You decide.
Also, imagine this: what if Vasilisa and Baba Yaga are the same person? Perhaps we all need to delve deep into the wood of our subconscious to face – and conquer – our dark side (or make a pact with it?), enabling us to grow into a more formidable version of ourselves. Knowledge of good and evil, and of our own moral boundaries, is the strongest weapon of all. Interestingly, the fairy tale of Vasilisa is ambiguous on whether she uses her weapon – Baba Yaga’s wildfire – deliberately or just passively observes her stepmother and stepsisters’ demise. We don’t know if at any point she could have spared or saved them… Perhaps, if the whole story is a metaphor for moral liberation, they simply represent her inhibitions and constraints.
