about

Words: Alexander Pushkin, translated by John Farndon, adapted by Daria Kulesh
Tune: Daria Kulesh

A pious monk, trapped in his rigid avoidance of all worldly temptation and sin, encounters an enchanting and dangerous creature. Not of this world, the beguiling Rusalka plays by a different set of rules entirely. Are the monk’s feelings for her lust or love? Paradoxically, I’m in favour of the latter, as he succumbs so happily and instantly and discovers, for the first time in his life, a pure and unburdened joy in simply admiring the Rusalka’s wild and childlike beauty. She tempts him with freedom he had never known or imagined. I would even argue that the ambiguous ending suggests several possibilities – the most obvious is the monk’s watery demise, but perhaps he has finally found his freedom, and his true happiness, by following his Rusalka and escaping into an afterworld other than heaven?
