about

Words & tune: Daria Kulesh

At first glance, quite a straightforward morality tale from Russian folklore: the good girl gets rewarded, the bad girl gets punished by the Russian Father Christmas prototype, the snow demon Morozko. But there is irony in that the one who asks for nothing gets everything; while the one who demands everything ends up with nothing. The meek shall inherit the Earth?
Also, in another classic Russian story, Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita, the Devil himself advises the heroine, “You should never ask anyone for anything. Never – and especially from those who are more powerful than yourself.” A lesson that is hard to follow in the modern world – “shy bairns get nowt” – but at the very least, we should never ask for, or feel entitled to, things that aren’t meant for us.
