An old Soviet joke with Middle Eastern origins and the loosely historic fable of the Wise Men of Gotham, blended into a commentary on the current state of politics. Growing up in Russia, I have never trusted the self-serving predators in power, knowing that any tearful or angry protest will only be ignored. The only effective way of resistance is to escape into a carnival world of make-believe, allegory, satire, madness. Russia has a long-standing tradition of holy fools who under the guise of madmen spoke the truth to the Tsars themselves.
