Let’s take a look at the cravings and urges that fuel our existence - “drink, food, laughter, desire, passion, curiosity, the simple realities which nourish the roots of our highest and vaguest creations.” (Anais Nin’s preface to Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer). In a simplistic and moralistic narrative, they often “lead us into temptation” and result in “sin”. But the landscapes of our emotions and passions are way too complex and intricate. What truly makes us feel alive? What brings us fulfilment? What helps us blossom into the best versions of ourselves? The rigid biblical framework of virtue and sin, reward and punishment is shaken and stirred by the pure, playful pagan lust for life. If seeking pleasure and following your heart doesn’t hurt, subjugate or break others, if it’s about giving rather than taking – then perhaps it’s a natural way to be, and not a deviation or “sin” at all?
