about

Words: William Butler Yeats
Tune: Joseph Sobol (from In the Deep Heart’s Core: A Mystic Cabaret)

The story of a jester, possessed by a consuming love for a queen – who is hardly aware of his existence – struck me partly because mirrors a Russian classic, The Garnet Bracelet by Alexander Kuprin. The short novel is based on a true “sad story of a minor telegraph clerk named P.P. Zheltikov who so hopelessly, touchingly and selflessly fell in love with Lyubimov's wife (D.D. is now a Vilno governor)”, as the writer himself summarised it in a letter to a friend. Is this a perfect example of “a true love that happens once in a thousand years”? A love so chaste that flesh is only an obstacle, a prison for the heart and the soul. As a romantic young girl, did I ever dream to be the object of such adoration? Or is this all-consuming love a curse to both the admirer and the admired?
